About This Retreat
One of the highlights of Oaxaca is the food and the broad range of restaurants and eateries. The food is not included in the cost of the retreat and we will be free to go out together for meals or on our own. There are many sites, towns and villages of interest on the surrounding mountain plain. The area in known for carpet making and the famed pyramid site, Monte Alban, stands majestically on a mountain mesa above the city of Oaxaca.
Oaxaca city itself is a haven for artists and creative expression and has a lively musical/dance atmosphere as well. There is music every night when I am out for a walk. The Mexican people here are primarily native Indian and come from many tribes in the surrounding mountain valley. They are smaller in stature, very dark and a beautiful people. The Oaxacans are very family oriented and spend alot of time outside. There are lots of juice bars, fresh fruit and great markets.
Itinerary
The retreat will begin on Sunday, March 2nd at 5pm. We will be arriving in Oaxaca City via Mexico City on AeroMexico or MexicanAir. Continental Airlines also offers direct, roundtrip service from Houston. We will be staying in the Hotel Villa de Campo, which is a short 5 minute walk to the Santo Domingo cathedral and a 10 minute walk to the zocalo (central square). Villa de Campo is a three star hotel, family owned and lovingly attended to. There is a pool in the large garden / courtyard within the hotel which is refreshing and delightful. While we are close to the center of Oaxaca City, the hotel is in a quiet, residential neighborhood.
We'll begin our yoga practice on Monday morning with an early pranayama and meditation practice going right into the active morning practice. We'll gather again in the mid-to-late afternoon for a two hour restorative, forward bend and twisting practice. The 2-5 pm period of the day is quite hot and a perfect time for the afternoon practice. We will finish our last class on Saturday afternoon and flights out should be on Sunday. If you have more time I would definitely recommend another week at the beaches of Oaxaca state. There is Huatulco, Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido. I took an overnight bus last year with ease and it was a delightful change from the heat of Oaxaca City.
Cost
- Double: $750
